My friend from Texas said my book club pick was 'too political' for her
We were reading 'The Bluest Eye' and she told me she felt uncomfortable with the heavy themes. It made me realize I wasn't picking books to challenge us, just ones I thought were safe. How do you pick books that are worth the tough talks?

Honestly, maybe pick books that make you uncomfortable too, not just your friends.

Ugh, hard agree. I mean, I stuck with the same cozy genres for years. Then I tried a weird sci-fi book that totally messed with my head, and it was so good. It's scary to branch out but you find the coolest stuff.

Honestly my cousin's book club fell apart over something similar. They picked a book about the prison system and half the group just stopped showing up. Tbh it's tricky because you want people to actually read the stuff. Maybe try a book that's tough but has really good characters you can all get into first, like a family story with some hard history in it. That way the talk can start with the people in the book, not just the big ideas.
