PSA: My banned book reading nook setup caused a rift with the HOA
I built a small shelf in my den just for books that have been challenged, like 'The Color Purple' and 'Harry Potter'. The HOA saw a photo online and sent a letter calling it 'inappropriate display of contentious material'. Now I have to argue that literature isn't a neighborhood hazard. It's wild how putting books on a shelf can turn into a censorship battle at home.

Look at the news, HOAs are absolutely getting into book fights now. Saw a case in Texas where an HOA tried to stop a Little Free Library with "banned" books. They absolutely see it as part of keeping up appearances, same as a lawn ornament. Your den is just the new front line.

HOAs deal with home stuff like paint colors and noise, not books. Book bans are mostly from schools or libraries lately. You might be thinking of school board meetings, those get heated. Similar vibe but different groups, lol.
