That 'read the uncensored version' advice backfired in my book club

My friend Dana in Portland told me to swap to the original Chinese edition of a banned memoir before our club meeting. I spent 3 weeks tracking down a copy and half the group quit because the translation notes were too dense. Has anyone else had a banned book recommendation that made things worse instead of better?

Is it really the book's fault when the whole point of reading banned work is to actually read the banned part, not just skim a translation? Your group quit because the notes were dense, but that sounds like a sign the book was doing its job by making people slow down and think. I've seen clubs fall apart over too-easy reads, so maybe a little challenge did them a favor by filtering out the people who just wanted a light night out. Honestly, tracking down that edition was the most interesting part of the adventure, and you got a story out of it.

Idk, dense notes are just the book's way of saying "earn it.
