Unpopular opinion: my tofu press was a $30 mistake that saved my week

I got banned from a vegan recipe group for saying you don't need a fancy press. Just use a clean brick and a towel. Worked fine for 3 years until last Tuesday when my brick split mid-press and tofu went everywhere. Now I'm back to using folded dish towels and heavy books from my shelf. Anyone else ditch pricey kitchen tools for junk that just works?

Yeah I read somewhere that chefs just use plates and cans, same idea.

Yeah but here's the thing though - plates are flat and cans have that ridge on the bottom. A proper pizza steel is thick and solid all the way through, stores heat way better. Have you actually tried cooking pizza on a can? I mean like a full size pizza, not just a little frozen one? Because I've messed around with all kinds of pans and honestly nothing holds heat like a dedicated steel. The thermal mass is totally different.
