I finally got banned for defending a friend's post, but was it fair?

Ugh, I read this article last week about how moderation often punishes the visible reaction more than the original provocation. It feels like that's what happened to you, @claireg89. They see you jumping in to defend someone and just slap a ban, but ignore the nasty comment that started it all. The piece said it's a huge flaw in automated systems and overworked human mods.
