Last week my debate club got shut down for a 'fire code' excuse

We had 12 people in a room rated for 30 and the admin still said we were a 'crowd risk' and kicked us out. I ended up just hosting it in the parking lot behind the library. Has anyone else dealt with admin suddenly finding new rules to stop your group from meeting?

I mean, maybe it's just me but 12 people in a room meant for 30 sounds like it should be fine. But I've seen fire code stuff used to shut down student groups at my old high school too, and it usually had nothing to do with the actual fire safety. They were just looking for a reason to stop whatever group was meeting. Like one time my friend's gaming club got the same treatment because the admin didn't like the "distraction" of kids playing Smash Bros after school. So yeah, it sucks but I think your parking lot idea was actually smart.

And honestly? I've been that "the fire marshal is coming" person before, except I was the one trying to get a club to meet in a hallway corner with 15 people stuffed into a broom closet. Like, it's not a good look when your solution to "too many kids" is literally parking them in a lot, but hey, at least they're not getting burned alive, right? That's a win in my book. Though knowing my luck, the admin would show up and say the lot's not zoned for parking either.
