A customer in my chair asked why I still strop my straight razor by hand when I own a machine, and his follow up question stuck with me
He said his grandfather ran a shop in Gary, Indiana for 40 years and never once cut a client because he could feel the blade change through the leather, then asked me if I could still feel it going dull or if I just trust the timer.
Like yeah it sounds deep but the guy with the machine probably cuts just as many people as the guy with the leather. Some things are tradition and some things are just preference, not everything has to be a life lesson.
