Just realized how much clipper guards have changed since I started cutting in 2004
I was cleaning out my station drawer yesterday and found my old Oster guards from when I started cutting at a shop in Gary, Indiana back in 2004. Those things were these hard plastic shells that would flex and snap if you looked at them wrong, and the sizing was all over the place, so a #2 from one set cut different than a #2 from another. Fast forward to now and I'm using magnetic guards that click on tight and actually hold their size, and the difference in my fades is night and day. Back then I'd spend an extra 10 minutes blending because the guard would ride up on me mid pass, and clients would feel me going over the same spot a dozen times. Now the magnets stay put and I can hit a skin fade in half the time with way less guesswork. I still keep the old ones in the drawer for nostalgia but I'd never go back to cutting with them. Any of you old timers notice the same thing, or is it just me?
Used to laugh at guys buying the new magnetic guards thinking it was all hype, but after borrowing a set for a week I went and bought my own. My blends are cleaner and I'm not fighting the clipper anymore, so yeah, I was wrong.
