PSA: My fix for squeaky disc brakes started a debate in the shop
I worked on a bike where the disc brakes made a loud squeal no matter what. First, I cleaned the rotors with brake cleaner, but the noise returned after a few rides. Some mechanics here insist that cleaning alone is enough and sanding ruins the rotors. Others say a quick sand with fine paper is needed to remove contamination for good. I sanded them lightly, and the squeal stopped, but I worry about wearing the rotors down. What do you all do for noisy brakes? Is sanding a smart fix or a bad habit?

Ugh these mechanics arguing over sanding like it's some holy war. Next they'll be fighting over the right way to put air in the tires. It's like watching chefs argue over how much salt to use.

Like is the salt thing really that big a deal though?
