Third set of stripped crank bolts this month on the same Santa Cruz, starting to think it's me
A guy brought in a Santa Cruz Bronson three weeks ago with a creaking bottom bracket, and when I pulled the cranks the bolt threads came out with the bolt. I got him sorted with a helicoil and told him to torque to spec at 35 to 40 nm, but he was back last Tuesday with the exact same thing on the other side. I know he's a big rider at around 230 pounds and does drops, but two in one month feels like more than bad luck. I checked the frame threads under a light and they look fine, no cross threading visible, so now I'm wondering if his torque wrench is way off or if he's using grease where he shouldn't. Has anyone seen a run of these on this frame, or should I be looking harder at the bolt quality from that batch?
Man, I had a guy like this on a Nomad and it turned out his cheap torque wrench was reading about 15 nm low, so he was cranking way past spec without knowing it. I checked it against my beam wrench and it was scary off. Also worth asking if he's using anti seize on the bolt threads, because that stuff changes the clamping force big time and lets you over tighten without the click.
