I finally watched The Wire after hearing about it for years
Started with season 1 of The Wire last month and finished all 5 seasons in 3 weeks. How did this show from 2002 nail the modern drug war better than anything on TV today?

Did I just spend 3 straight weeks watching nothing but The Wire and somehow feel like I understand urban policy better than actual politicians? Yeah probably. That show does not age a day - the way it shows how institutions just fail people over and over is scarily accurate even now. Omar coming down the hallway in season 1 still gives me chills.

One thing I read that really stuck with me was how the show's creator David Simon said he wasn't making a cop show, he was making a show about the city. After watching The Wire, I can see exactly what he meant. It's like each season pulls back a different layer, showing how schools, politics, and the media all crash into each other. Got my cousin to watch it and he said the same thing about how real it still feels. That scene with Omar in the hallway is probably one of the best TV moments ever.
