My neighbor's comment about quenching oil made me switch my whole process

He said, 'You're not just cooling the steel, you're controlling the crystal structure,' after watching me use water on a simple knife. I swapped to canola oil for my last three projects and the difference in how the edge holds up is night and day. Anyone have a preferred brand for a basic quenching oil that won't break the bank?

Wow, that's a perfect example of how a tiny change in process can have a huge effect. I see it all the time with people using the wrong kind of sealer on a deck or floor. They don't realize the material itself needs a specific treatment to last. Your neighbor gave you some solid advice.

I mean, is it really that huge of a deal though? Idk, maybe it's just me but sometimes people get too worked up over the small stuff.

Honestly water works fine for a lot of simple carbon steels if you know what you're doing. The oil thing gets overhyped. A lot of old school guys used water for centuries and made tools that lasted. It's more about getting the temperature right than the liquid itself.
