Brought Catan to my parents' anniversary party and my dad's cousin flipped the board over a wheat trade
Two weeks ago I brought Catan to my parents' 40th anniversary party in Toledo thinking it would be a chill thing for the cousins to do after cake. My dad's cousin Ron, who is 67, got trade-blocked on wheat three turns in a row and just swept the whole board onto the floor with his forearm. Nobody moved for like ten seconds, then my aunt started laughing and Ron went outside to smoke. What I learned is that party games work way better when the group already plays games together, and family reunions are a war zone. Does anyone have a rule for when to just let somebody win a trade so the table stays calm?
Ron didn't flip the board because of the wheat block, he flipped it because he felt ganged up on. There's a difference between losing a trade and feeling like the whole table is working against you. If three people all refused him wheat in a row, that reads as a message, even if it wasn't meant that way. The fix isn't letting him win a trade, it's spreading the refusals around so no single person feels piled on. Next time, have somebody take one for the team and hand over the wheat, then get it back on a later turn.
