A retired guy at the Pittsburgh plant told me to always double-check the spec sheet, even if the foreman says it's fine
Honestly, this was about three years back on a big pressure vessel job. The foreman, Mike, had just okayed some 3/4 inch plate based on the old drawings. But this old-timer, Carl, pulled me aside and said, 'Kid, the new spec sheet in the office says 7/8 inch for that section. Go look.' He was right, and it saved a huge rework. Has anyone else had a vet catch a mistake like that before it went to weld?

Thought that was just busywork until it saved me too.

What saved you in the end?

Yeah man, I used to think those old guys were just being paranoid or trying to show off. But after Carl saved me on a bad bracket layout one time, I totally get it now. That second look is worth its weight in gold.
