Took me 6 hours to figure out a 5 minute fix on a feedwater line in Mobile
We had a leak on a 4-inch feedwater flange and I kept trying to re-torque the bolts thinking it was a gasket blowout, but it turned out the bolt holes were egged out from years of vibration and a simple set of stepped shims solved it, anyone else wasted a full shift on something embarrassingly basic?
Egged out bolt holes are the worst because everything still looks fine on the outside. We had the same thing on a condensate pump base a few years back, kept chasing vibration and re-shimming the motor until a guy with 30 years on us just laughed and showed us the holes were oval. Once you shim it right the torque actually holds and you stop chasing your tail every couple weeks. Funny how the fix is always cheaper than the hours you burned figuring it out. Now I check bolt holes first before I even touch a wrench on anything that's been running hot for years.
