Our book club read a 900 page doorstop and then a 150 page novella in one month
The difference was night and day. We spent 3 weeks struggling through the big book, barely finishing half of it, and the discussions were just people complaining about the slow parts. Then we read the short one in a week and had our best meeting ever, actually arguing about the ending. It made me wonder if we should start picking shorter books on purpose. Has anyone else had a group that shifted their whole reading list based on page count?

Pretty sure "doorstop" refers to the book's size, not its actual function as a doorstop. Your group might have better luck picking shorter books and actually finishing them for once.

Totally agree, my book club had the exact same awakening and now rarely touches anything over 250 pages.
