Showerthought: our club spent 3 months arguing over one book pick and it broke the group
We picked a 700 page novel back in March because one loud guy promised it would spark the best talk of the year. It did not. Half the group stalled at page 90, two people stopped showing up, and we burned 3 straight meetings debating whether to even finish it instead of talking about the actual story. Last Tuesday in Portland we finally voted to drop it and the room went quiet in a bad way. How do you all handle a pick that tanks the group without it turning into a fight?
Why not set a page cap before you pick anything? We keep our picks under 350 pages for exactly this reason. If a book can't get going by page 90 it's not worth the group's time, no matter how loud one person pushes it. Next time just say the pick has a deadline and if most people aren't into it by then, you move on without a big vote.
