Saw a neat trick at a vintage shop in Columbus

Stopped by a used book store and the owner was mending a broken spine with wax paper and a hot iron. He said it fixes the glue without remaking the whole hinge, and I tried it on an old paperback last night, worked way better than my usual tape job. Anyone else got a low-tech repair hack they swear by?

My grandma used to swear by that wax paper trick for her old cookbooks and I always figured it was some old wives tale. Then last week I tried it on a beat up copy of Dune where the pages were literally falling out in chunks. Worked stupid good, the spine actually flexes now instead of cracking. I used to just gorilla tape everything and call it a day, but now I feel dumb for all the ruined covers. Still not gonna iron my new stuff though, feels like asking for a melted mess.
