My aunt's pruning advice from 1998 finally made sense last spring
My aunt Vera always told me to cut rose bushes down harder than I thought was safe. I ignored her for years because it felt like vandalism. Last March I finally did it, chopped my two Knockouts down to about 8 inches. They came back thicker and bloomed heavier than I ever got with my cautious trimming. She also said to water at dawn, not dusk, because wet leaves overnight invite fungus. I always watered after work instead and fought black spot every single summer. Three months ago I switched to early mornings and my leaves stayed clean. That woman grew prize dahlias in clay soil and I should have listened sooner. Has anyone else had a relative give advice that took you a decade to actually try?
