Why does nobody talk about the 5 year battery life on these implanted BCIs
I was reading through a paper from the University of Michigan last week and they mentioned that most current implanted brain-computer interfaces need their batteries swapped out surgically every 5 to 7 years. That means a person could go through 8 or 9 surgeries just to keep the thing running over a normal lifetime. I always pictured these as install once and forget it, so that number really caught me off guard. Has anyone else seen real data on how long these power sources actually last in practice?
