My string line got knocked loose 4 courses up and I laid 60 bricks before I caught it
Was laying a garden wall out on Route 9 in Clifton and had the line set tight off the corner blocks, then my trowel handle clipped it while I was grabbing more mud. Laid 60 bricks before I stepped back and saw the whole run drifting out about 3/8 of an inch, so I had to tear out the top 4 courses and reset the pins. How do you all keep your line from getting bumped when you're working tight against a fence?
60 bricks is a lot of laying before noticing, I would have thrown my trowel in the truck and gone home for the day. That 3/8 inch drift is sneaky too because it looks fine up close and then you step back and it hits you. When I'm jammed up against a fence like that on a tight run, I run the line off a couple of those magnetic pin holders or just wrap it around a scrap block sitting on top of the wall so a bump doesn't send the whole thing swinging. I also quit grabbing mud over the top of the line, I walk around the corner instead even if it takes two extra seconds per brick. The real trick is checking your line from the end every 15 or 20 bricks, because your eye will lie to you when you're standing right in it.
