Saw a crew in Charleston laying brick with a level I've never seen before, anyone know what that is?
I was down in Charleston, SC a couple weeks ago visiting my sister and we walked past this job site downtown where they were putting up a brick wall on an old house. The guy was using this level I've never seen before, it had like a laser built right into the frame and a little screen on it. I watched for maybe 10 minutes and he never once pulled out a string line, just kept checking that thing and tapping bricks into place. I wanted to ask him about it but he was clearly busy and I didn't want to be that guy. I've been laying brick for 11 years and I still use my old 4 foot aluminum level for everything. Maybe I'm just stuck in my ways but I can't figure out how a laser level would even work on a rough brick face. Has anyone here tried one of those? I'm skeptical but also kind of curious if it's actually faster.
Reminds me of when my uncle bought one of those fancy self leveling laser deals for hanging cabinets back in like 2008. He was so proud of it, had it set up on the tripod in the kitchen, and my aunt walked through and knocked the whole thing over. Never seen a man so mad about a tool in my life. Anyway my point is those laser levels have come a long way since then, they make some now that mount right on the trowel handle or clip to your line blocks. The screen part is what gets me though, like what is it even showing you. Maybe angle or pitch for the course he's on. Curious if that guy was doing a veneer or actual structural work because that would change how much you could trust a gadget over your own eye.
