My slow cooker lid shattered mid-cook and made a huge mess
I was making a big batch of chili last Wednesday, trying to stretch a $20 grocery run into a week of lunches. About two hours into cooking on low, I heard a loud crack and saw the glass lid had split right down the middle, dumping steam and chili all over the counter. Turns out the lid was cold from being rinsed earlier, and the heat difference must have been too much for the cheap glass. I had to scramble to scoop the rest of the chili into a backup pot, but by then a lot of the liquid had evaporated and some beans got burned on the bottom. Ended up salvaging maybe half of it, so I lost about $8 worth of ingredients right there. The lid was from a no-name slow cooker I got at a thrift store for $15, so I guess I got what I paid for. Has anyone else had a slow cooker lid break on them like that, or am I just unlucky?

Man, that really stinks. I've had a similar thing happen with a cheap Pyrex dish once, but never a slow cooker lid. Did you have the heat on high for a bit before you put the lid on? I always try to let my glass lids warm up on the counter for a few minutes before I put them on a hot pot, especially if they've been washed recently. That thermal shock is no joke, it's like the glass just gives up. At least you were home to catch it before it ruined the whole batch, that chili was probably still pretty good.

Oh I know exactly what you mean @the_fiona, reminds me of when my grandma's casserole dish cracked from just a cold spoon of salsa...
