Talked to my cousin about his 'fun money' jar and it made me feel dumb

He showed me a literal jar on his counter where he puts $20 cash every Friday, and that's his only spending money for the week. He said, 'If the jar's empty, I'm done.' I've been using apps and spreadsheets for months, but seeing that physical limit hit different. Has anyone else gone back to cash for a specific category?

Yeah, that "physical limit hit different" thing is so true. I tried the envelope system for groceries last year because swiping my card made it feel like fake money. Having the actual cash in my hand made me stop and think before buying fancy cheese or extra snacks. It just works better for my brain.

Honestly, the envelope thing works because cash makes you feel the loss right away. Swiping a card is like a promise to pay later, so your brain doesn't register the hit. I even read about this one study where people at an auction spent way more using credit than cash. It's wild how a piece of plastic can just turn money into a number that doesn't feel real.
