Just read about a huge chemical spill in a river near Jakarta that got zero coverage here

My cousin there sent me a local news link last month, said the water turned black for days. How do stories like that just vanish outside the country?

Honestly, it's also about what fits the news cycle's mood. A chemical spill in Indonesia competes with a celebrity scandal or some political fight here, and the spill always loses. Our media picks stories that keep people watching, not what's actually important globally. It's not a conspiracy, it's just a broken system that treats disasters in poorer countries as less important. So the story doesn't vanish, it just never even gets in the door to begin with.

Local news tends to exaggerate small spills.
