Kazakhstan's internet blackout last month barely made Western news
I was tracking a story about a mining protest in Karaganda that got zero coverage in the US outlets I follow. On January 8th, the whole region lost mobile data for about 14 hours, and local reporters I follow on Telegram posted screenshots of blocked URLs. Then last week, I found a UN report from 3 years ago that documented similar shutdowns during harvest season, but nobody picked it up. The protest was just workers asking for safety gear, not even political. Has anyone else noticed these regional blackouts get buried unless there's a civil war or oil price angle?
