Picked a local paper over a national one for a story about water rights in Arizona

Last month I had to choose between covering a story for the Arizona Republic versus the Tombstone Tribune. The Republic offered better pay and more eyes on my work. But I went with the Tribune because they don't censor or bury stories about mining companies polluting local wells. My piece about a rancher's legal fight after his well turned brown got picked up by two other papers. Just hit 15k shares on social media today, which is big for me. Has anyone else taken a smaller outlet to get a real story out?

Nah, I get why you did it but bigger outlets still have resources that actually help in the long run. 15k shares is nice but that Republic piece could've reached lawmakers who actually vote on water policy.

Totally agree. Made that mistake myself once, it went nowhere.
