Countersunk screws keep splitting my oak face frames

Countersunk screws keep splitting my oak face frames. I've been fighting this for the last 2 weeks on a kitchen job in Portland. Drilled pilot holes, used a countersink bit, even waxed the screws, but the oak keeps cracking right at the last 2 turns. My uncle who's been doing this 30 years said I'm drilling too deep on the pilot hole, leaving no meat for the threads to grab. Switched to a 5/32 bit and waxed the screw threads again, and the last 6 frames went together clean. Anybody else run into this with white oak specifically, or is it just my luck with this batch of lumber?
