Old timer told me to stop using pocket hole screws on face frames

Guy named Dave who's been building cabinets since the 80s saw me setting up a face frame with pocket holes and told me I was creating future problems. Said the screws will loosen up after a few seasons of humidity changes in the house. I thought he was just being old school. Fast forward 3 years and I got a call back on that kitchen job - 4 joints had gaps you could fit a nickel in. Now I use dowels or mortise and tenon on face frames. Anyone else run into this issue with pocket holes long term?

Used pocket screws on a boat cabinet once. Never again.

Never again" sounds about right. That's like using bubblegum and hope to hold a boat together.
