Had to decide between a flea market find or a full CLA kit on my desk
Stood at my bench last Tuesday staring at a beat-up Nikon F from a garage sale in Akron and a fresh CLA kit I already bought for a customer's camera. Picked the junker F because the shutter sounded off and I was curious. Turns out a dried lubricant blob was locking the mirror, cleaned it with lighter fluid and it fired clean after a $10 fix. Has anyone else gambled on a mystery camera instead of sticking to the easy job?

Isn't it funny how we always pick the fixer-upper over the sure thing? Seems like everyone's drawn to the broken thing that might just work again with a little patience.

People act like choosing a fixer-upper is some deep character flaw. It's just a house with bad wallpaper and a cracked tile, not a moral failing. Half the time the "sure thing" is just boring and overpriced anyway. My buddy spent two years gutting a 1970s ranch and now his mortgage is half of what rent would be. Everybody loves a good before and after picture. Is it really that deep?
