My professor mentioned a 1977 Supreme Court case about a Nazi march, and it got me thinking
He said the ruling protected the group's right to assemble in Skokie, Illinois, even though their message was vile. Makes you wonder where that line gets drawn on a modern campus, doesn't it?

That line moves when it's your group getting shouted down.

True story, I once tried to argue about pineapple on pizza in a group chat. Got absolutely buried by my own friends. Suddenly I was a big free speech absolutist over a ham and pineapple debate. The line definitely moves when you're the one getting roasted.

Yeah, the line always feels different when it's your idea getting shut down. I found it helps to pick your battles and know the room. Sometimes stating your piece clearly and then letting the awkward silence sit does more than any argument. You won't change every mind, but you stop the feeling of being talked over.
