Overheard a professor say trigger warnings are just 'coddling' and I had to bite my tongue in the seminar room

She was talking about a graphic novel on war trauma and said students need to 'toughen up' instead of asking for a heads up, which just felt like ignoring the whole point of making class accessible for everyone has anyone else had a prof dismiss this stuff outright like that?

@tyler176 hit it right on the head honestly. (Toughening up is basically just ignoring the problem). These professors forget that accessibility is about helping people learn, not about making them uncomfortable for no reason. A trigger warning is just a heads up, not a ban or anything crazy. You can still teach the hard stuff while giving people a chance to prepare for it. It's real simple empathy, and dismissing it as "coddling" misses the whole point of creating a class where everyone can actually engage with the material.

Toughening up isn't the same as making class accessible for everyone though.
