Realized I was the one shouting down speakers at my own college

Back in 2008 I was at a campus talk where some controversial journalist was speaking. I kept interrupting him and thought I was being brave. Then a quiet kid in the front row turned around and asked me if I'd want the same treatment if it was my grandma speaking her mind. That hit me hard. Now I cringe thinking about how I thought shouting was the same as standing up for something.

That quiet kid basically hit me with a mirror I wasn't ready to see. I was always the loudest person in the room thinking being heard meant being right. Didn't help that my friends hyped me up for it too. It took sitting in the quiet after that talk to realize I'd been confusing volume with courage.

That quiet kid really made you stop and think, huh.
