My uncle's retirement advice turned out to be dead wrong for me

Last year my uncle, who worked 30 years at a paper mill outside Green Bay, told me to never turn down a union job no matter what. He said the pension and steady hours beat any side hustle or small business, period. I took his advice and passed on a maintenance gig with a private contractor that paid $28 an hour with OT. Three months later I got laid off from the union warehouse when they cut the night shift. Now I'm back to doing side work with zero benefits and I can't help but wonder if I should've just trusted my own gut about the contractor. His advice probably worked for his day, but the economy here isn't the same. Has anyone else had a relative give them career advice that backfired because times changed?

But one bad layoff doesn't mean unions are dead, that contractor could've cut you just as fast.
