The dispatcher in Newark who saved me $200 on my Civic, one phone call changed how I ship cars
Honestly I used to just book the cheapest quote online and hope for the best, which went fine until it didn't. Last month I was shipping my 2012 Civic from Newark to Austin and the first broker quoted me $1,150 with a pickup window of 5 days. I called a smaller dispatcher a friend recommended and she looked at the same route and just laughed. She told me Tuesday and Wednesday pickups from that terminal always cost more because every dealer in the area ships then, and she got me on a Thursday truck for $940 with a 2 day window. She also warned me to never pay a deposit before the carrier is actually assigned, because that is how people lose their money. Has anyone else had a dispatcher straight up talk them out of the expensive option like that?
I used to figure the price was the price and there was no point calling anyone, just click the cheapest one and cross your fingers. Reading this makes me see it different though, because that dispatcher basically showed you the same truck can cost way less just by picking the right day. I always assumed brokers and dispatchers were all pulling from the same list and the numbers came out the same no matter who you talk to. The deposit thing gets me too, I never knew that was a red flag, I would've handed money over no questions. Guess it pays to actually talk to a person who knows the route instead of just trusting a screen.
