How a 2 minute chat at a Denver coffee shop fixed my resume after 14 rejections
I was sitting at a coffee shop on 16th Street in Denver last month, staring at my laptop after getting my 14th rejection email in 6 weeks. A guy at the next table saw my screen full of red "not moving forward" notes and asked what kind of jobs I was going for. I told him project coordinator roles and he asked to see my resume, which I thought was weird but I said sure. He pointed at my summary section and said it read like a job description instead of a person, then showed me how he rewrote his own resume on his phone in like 3 minutes. I tried his version that night, sent out 5 apps, and got 2 calls back within a week. Still not sure if it was the rewrite or just luck though, has anyone else had a total stranger give them better advice than a career coach?
That summary section thing is real, but 5 apps is a tiny sample so I wouldn't credit the rewrite alone. Two callbacks from 5 is a 40% hit rate though, and most people get maybe 1 in 20, so something clearly changed.
