Just read that 85% of jobs are filled through networking, not online apps

I found this stat in a report from a group called LinkedIn Talent Solutions. It said most people get hired because someone they know puts in a good word. I always thought sending out a ton of resumes was the main way. This makes me think I should spend more time talking to people in my field. Has anyone here actually gotten a job just from a connection they made? How did you start that conversation?

My last three gigs all came from LinkedIn DMs.

You say that stat felt a bit high, and I agree with you. I've been hiring people for over twenty years and I'd say it's closer to maybe half that number. The thing is, a lot of people confuse "networking" with just knowing someone who works there. But most hiring managers I know still look at a stack of resumes first and pick the best qualified person. A good word from a friend might get your resume to the top of the pile, but it won't get you the job if you aren't the right fit. I think people overestimate how much a casual connection really helps.
