Took a $4k pay cut to leave a toxic job, 14 months later I am way ahead

Last spring I left a role where my manager screamed at people and my pay was $58k. A competitor offered $54k but with a real schedule and a team that actually talks to each other. I almost said no because 4 grand felt huge for my family. But after 14 months I got promoted twice and I am making $61k now. My old job had two people quit and they still have not filled one spot. Has anyone else gambled on a lower number and seen it work out or backfire?

The real schedule alone was worth way more than 4 grand.
