Remember a buddy who tried that for a client's uneven backyard. He ended up using a bunch of concrete deck blocks and adjustable pedestals. The whole thing was a huge pain but it actually worked pretty well in the end.

Sounds like your buddy basically built a giant Jenga set that could hold a barbecue. All that work just to avoid moving some dirt around... classic contractor move. Bet the client paid extra for the "floating deck experience" too.

Honestly I've seen decks like that and they always make me nervous. Like you're just waiting for one block to shift after a heavy rain. I mean sure it saves on digging but it feels like a temporary fix they charge permanent prices for. Maybe it's just me but I'd rather see a proper base even if it costs a bit more.
