I keep using a speed square for angle cuts and my crew thinks I'm wrong
After 12 years on site in Portland, I still lay out my rafter angles with a $8 speed square instead of a digital protractor, and it's never let me down on a single roof. Sure, the digital guys get there faster, but has anyone else found the old method just works better when you're working in the rain?

Portland rain is no joke, and I’ve been there with wet gloves and a soggy pencil trying to read numbers off anything digital. My speed square has lived in my pouch for 15 years now, and honestly, it’s the one tool I never worry about dropping or getting soaked. There’s something about feeling the angle by hand that just sticks with me, even when the digital crowd is shouting their readings from across the roof. You’re not wrong at all, if it’s repeatable and the roof doesn’t leak, the crew can grumble all they want. Keep doing what works, that’s what really matters on site.
