TIL the ceiling joists in an old church near me are all hand hewn from one log

I was doing a flooring job in a church built in 1880 outside of Portland. I looked up and noticed every joist was split from a single massive timber, still showing axe marks. Has anyone else run into old hand hewn lumber that made you stop and look twice?

People don't build things to last like that anymore.
