Critique from a book club member made me ditch my highlighters

I used to go wild with highlighters in my books. Every important passage got marked yellow, pink, or green. Then a lady named Carol in my club called me out. She said I was basically painting over the author's work. Made it impossible for her to borrow my copy. At first I got defensive. But then I thought about it. She was right. I was distracting myself from the actual reading. Now I just use sticky notes for key moments. Easy to remove and doesn't ruin the pages. Has anyone else gotten feedback that changed how they enjoy books?

Finaly tackled that attic run I'd been dreading for 3 months

Had to fish coax through a 40-foot finished attic over in Oak Park last Thursday, and it was a nightmare of blown-in insulation and tight trusses. Used a glow rod and a fish tape together to make it work in under 2 hours. Anybody else got a trick for getting through deep insulation without losing your mind?

Ran into a guy at a bus station in Boise who had a crazy money-saving trick

I was waiting for a Greyhound in Boise last winter and this older guy next to me pulled out a thermos of soup he made at his hostel. He said he saves about $40 a week by making meals in bulk and carrying them in stainless steel containers. Then he showed me his itinerary - he books flights on Tuesdays around 2am because that's when airlines drop their low prices. I asked if he ever got caught with the soup at security, and he just laughed and said "they never check food if it's in a thermos." Has anyone else tried booking flights at weird hours like that?

Just hit my fifth year as a solo attorney and I'm still torn on whether flat fees or hourly billing is more fair to clients

I billed a client $3,500 flat for a simple estate plan last month but another client with the exact same work paid $4,200 on hourly and I can't figure out which one felt like a rip-off to who... what do you all think works better in practice?

Watched a guest speaker get shut down at community college in Tucson last spring

I used to think campus free speech rules meant anyone could talk, but last April a local historian got cut off mid sentence for mentioning a controversial date about a mining strike. The moderator literally pulled the mic after 4 minutes and said we were running out of time, but the schedule showed 20 more minutes. Has anyone else seen a speaker get silenced for historical facts like that?

Got banned from a local Facebook gardening group for suggesting someone use pine needles instead of bark mulch

Last month in the "Springfield Gardeners" group I posted that pine needles drop the pH just like bark does and the admin said I was spreading dangerous misinformation and removed me within 20 minutes, has anyone else run into ultra strict mods in hobby groups?

That time a customer told me my invoices looked like a mess

Back in 2018, I had a client look at my invoice and say 'this looks like a kid scribbled on it.' Hurt my pride, but she was right. I was just listing line items with no dates or descriptions. So I changed everything to a simple table format with clear job numbers and payment terms. Took me about two weekends to redo my whole template in Excel. Now I get paid faster because people actually understand what they're paying for. Anyone else had a client straight up tell you your paperwork was sloppy?

A director told me my dialogue sounded 'too American' for a UK scene

I was writing this short film set in a pub in Manchester, and I thought I nailed the local vibe. But after a table read, the director pulled me aside and said my characters kept saying things like 'gonna' and 'awesome' instead of 'gonnae' or 'class'. He pointed out that a Mancunian wouldn't say 'trash can' they'd say 'bin' and 'sidewalk' makes no sense there. I had to rewrite half the script, swapping in slang like 'mither' for bother and 'sorted' instead of handled. It took me three full days with a UK slang guide and a mate from Leeds to get it right. Now I check every character's region before typing a single line. Has anyone else had to rework dialogue because a local caught your slang slip?

Why I was dead wrong about using a mandoline slicer for everything

For years I swore I would never use a mandoline in my kitchen. I thought they were dangerous and a crutch for people who couldnt handle a knife properly. Then about 6 months ago I started prepping for a catering gig that needed 50 pounds of perfectly uniform potatoes. Knife work was taking forever and my consistency was all over the place. I finally borrowed a cheap plastic mandoline from a buddy who insisted I try it. After the first pass I felt like an idiot for being so stubborn. It cut my prep time in half and the slices were exactly the same thickness every time. I still use my knives for most stuff but I see now the mandoline has its place. Anyone else have a tool they were super skeptical about that ended up being a game changer?

Took me 3 years to admit I was wrong about egg-bar shoes

Honestly, I used to think egg-bar shoes were a gimmick. Been shoeing for 12 years now, mostly hunter jumpers in the Lexington area. I had this one mare with chronic quarter cracks that just would not heal no matter what I tried. My mentor kept telling me to try egg-bars but I brushed him off for like 3 years. Finally gave in last spring on a whim and put a set on her. The difference in her heel growth over the next 4 months was ridiculous. The crack grew out clean and she went sounder than she had been in 2 seasons. I still think they get overprescribed by vets who never pull a shoe, but for a horse with specific heel issues they work. What do you guys do when a vet recommends a shoe you think is overkill for the situation?

Bought a cheap paint gun off Amazon, thought it would be junk for sure

Buddy of mine grabbed a $30 gun from Harbor Freight for a dirt track car he was piecing together. He figured it would be good for maybe one panel before it clogged up and went in the trash. That thing sprayed three whole cars before he finally replaced it because the cup started leaking, not even because the gun itself died. He still talks about it like it some kind of miracle tool, swears he'll never buy a name brand gun again.

Poured $2,000 into a campaign sign order for our local rally and it backfired hard

Pulled my own version of this back in 2020 when I ordered a bunch of "Honk if you love freedom" bumper stickers for a local car rally. Paid extra for the "premium UV resistant vinyl" and they were basically just sticker paper that turned into a faded white rectangle after three days in the Arizona sun. Had to drive behind my buddy's truck at the actual rally and peel off the sad little ghost-stickers myself while he yelled at me. Never felt more like a political lawn ornament than hauling a trash bag full of my own failed merchandise to the dump at 7am on a Saturday.

Used to swear by HSS endmills for aluminum. Just switched to carbide after fighting with tool wear on a big job.

Wait, you got 40 parts out of an HSS endmill in 6061? I was changing them every 10-15 on similar runs. That's insane.
