That $5 carpet seam roller I almost threw away

I picked up a used seam roller at a garage sale for 5 bucks last summer. The thing looked beat up but after I cleaned it up and tightened the handle, it rolled smoother than my expensive new one. Been using it on every job since and it just works better for getting those seams flat on thick carpet. Anybody else find a random cheap tool that outshines the big name stuff?

You make sure the handle is tight on that one? I had a cheap roller that wobbled loose every few passes until I threw a lock washer on it. Fixed it right up.

I read an article from a flooring magazine about how the old National brand steel seam rollers from the 90s are way better than the new plastic handled ones. The guy said the weight distribution is just different on those older tools and they press the seam tape better. Sounds like your garage sale find is from that same era. The lock washer trick is smart too. My cheap roller started wobbling last month and I just tightened it with pliers but that only works for so long.
