Spent $40 on a VPN just to read an article my local paper blocked

I tried to read a piece about a city council vote from my hometown paper online, but they had it locked behind a paywall with no free views left. I got so mad I paid for a cheap VPN, changed my location, and got right in. Has anyone else hit a wall like this where you just want basic info but feel like you're being priced out?

Man, that's the modern day library fine. You're just trying to be informed, but you end up paying a stupid tax for it. At least you got your article.

Seriously? That paper needs to pay its reporters somehow. You got the info, so the system worked, right? It's not like public info is always free to get.

My buddy got hit with a huge fee just to get a copy of his own property survey from the county office. It's public record but they still charged him over a hundred bucks for the printout. Feels like a racket sometimes lol.
