Hot take: fine dining tasting menus are losing their soul

I just got back from a spot in Portland that charged $185 for 12 courses and every plate was more about plating than flavor. Are we pushing creativity too far and forgetting that people actually want to eat something that tastes good, or is this just me being bitter about a high bill?

Does your buddy think the chef just forgot what salt tastes like? My friend went to a similar place in Austin and said the beet foam tasted like a candle smelled, not like actual food. He wound up getting tacos down the street after just to feel full.

Pretty sure my buddy would eat a saltine cracker and complain it's too salty. He paid sixty bucks for a tasting menu last month and said the best part was the bread because it tasted like actual food. I told him to just go get a burrito next time but he insists on being fancy about it. Meanwhile I'm over here eating instant ramen while he sends me photos of foam on a rock.
