I found out a news site I read for years was blocked in Turkey

I was trying to share an article from a site I use with a friend in Istanbul last week, and he said he couldn't open it. He told me the entire domain has been banned there by the government for over a year. I had no idea, because I could read it just fine from Ohio. It made me realize how much I take for granted, and how my view of 'free' information is totally shaped by where I live. Has anyone else had a moment like this, where you realized a normal website for you is completely off limits somewhere else?

Shoutout to the guy who showed me his drawer slide jig at the Tacoma wood show

I used to measure and mark each one by hand, but after seeing his setup I built a simple plywood template that locates the holes in under a minute. Anyone have a better jig for full extension slides on inset cabinets?

My aunt swore by room temp butter for cookies, and I finally tried it

She always said to leave the butter out for an hour before making chocolate chip cookies, but I never listened and just used it cold from the fridge. Last Sunday I actually did it her way for a batch of my usual recipe. The cookies spread perfectly and were way softer in the middle, just like she promised. Has anyone else had a simple tip from a family member totally change how something bakes?

Tried using a cheap plastic mixing tub for my Kirby Morgan seal grease, total disaster.

Picked up a small tub from a hardware store for like $5, figured it would be fine for keeping my grease clean on the boat. Left it in the sun for maybe an hour during a surface interval in Tampa. Came back and the whole thing had warped and cracked, grease everywhere. My supervisor just shook his head. Learned that lesson: spend the extra on a proper stainless container. What do you guys use to keep your grease kit together on deck?

Noticed a weird pattern with pottery shards at the old mill site

Last week, I was helping sort finds from the dig at the old mill site near Concord. We kept finding these tiny blue glazed pieces mixed in with the usual redware, which didn't make sense for the 1790s timeline. Last month, a volunteer found a 1920s soda bottle cap in the same layer. Three years ago, the initial survey marked it as a single-period site. Makes you wonder how much stuff gets churned up by later activity, right? Has anyone else had a site where the dating got totally scrambled by modern mixing?

Warning: I asked a simple question about my car's check engine light on a forum and got a whole new hobby

My old truck's light came on last week, so I posted on a car help forum asking what the code P0420 meant. I figured someone would just say 'catalytic converter' and that would be it. Instead, this one guy wrote back a huge, friendly guide on how to check the oxygen sensors first with a cheap $20 tool from Harbor Freight. I was bored, so I tried it. Turns out, the upstream sensor was just dirty. Cleaning it fixed the light. I learned that asking 'anything' can open a door you never expected to walk through. Now I'm weirdly into reading engine codes for fun. Has anyone else picked up a random skill just from asking a dumb question online?

Remember when we used to steam faces for a full 15 minutes before extractions?

I had a regular in 2010 who would always book the longest facial just for that step. Then around 2015, I went to a class in Chicago that showed how too much heat can actually hurt the skin barrier. Now I only steam for 3 to 5 minutes, depending on the skin type, and my results are way better. When did you all make that switch?

Spent $85 on a Japanese hole punch jig and I'm torn

I got it for making stab-bound notebooks, thinking it would save me hours of measuring and marking. The first project went smooth, but on the second, the paper shifted and I ruined a whole signature. My friend says a simple cardboard template is just as good for free. Has anyone else tried these jigs, or do you stick with old-school methods?
