Learned a trick for sharpening knives at a food truck event last weekend

One of the older guys running a taco truck showed me how to use a ceramic mug bottom as a quick hone between cuts. Has anyone else tried that method or is it just a hack for when you're in a pinch?

That mug trick saved me at a tailgate last summer when my buddy's knife was dragging through tomatoes. Did it hold up for your whole shift or just a quick fix?

I mean yeah I've done that with a coffee mug more than once out camping and it works fine for a quick touch up, definitely beats having dull knives when you're in the middle of cooking.
