A job in an old Charleston house taught me to check for hidden flues behind the plaster.

Found a whole second fireplace they didn't know about after my camera probe hit brick, so now I always scan the whole wall with a stud finder first, anyone else run into these surprise doubles?

Totally get that, old houses are full of weird secrets. My buddy was redoing a closet and found a tiny door behind the drywall, like a perfect little hidden cabinet. Turns out it was just an old laundry chute they sealed up, but it was still a cool find. Makes you wonder what else is just covered over and forgotten in those walls. Always something new with that kind of work.

Actually, that's not a laundry chute. Those are usually bigger and go between floors. What your friend found was probably a built-in ironing board cabinet. They were super common in old houses, a little door in the wall that folded down. People just drywalled right over them when they stopped using them. It's a shame, because they're really neat. You find them in closets or kitchens all the time.
