Got burned by a knockoff zisha teapot in Yixing and now I check every clay pot before I buy
I was in Yixing two summers ago at one of those tea markets near Dingshu town, and this vendor swore up and down his pots were real zisha from the local mines. I paid 800 yuan for a small shi piao shape, felt pretty good about it, took it home, and spent a whole month seasoning it with my oolong every morning. Then a friend who has been drinking tea for 20 years picked it up, tapped the lid, and said the ring was too high. Turned out it was a mix of regular clay and dye, not the real stuff from Huanglongshan. I was pretty annoyed but honestly more at myself than the guy, because I skipped the two things real buyers do, which is check the inside for uneven color and ask about the firing temp. Now I only buy from shops where they let me pour hot water in first and smell it, and I stick to vendors other tea people have vouched for. Anyone else get fooled by a fake zisha pot, and did you figure it out from the sound, the smell, or just a friend calling it out?
