A guy at the auto parts store in Toledo told me to stop washing my chrome with dish soap
I was buying wax last month and the older guy behind the counter asked what I used to clean my bumpers. When I told him Dawn dish soap, he shook his head and said the salt in it will pit chrome over time. He handed me a $6 bottle of plain baby shampoo and said to use that with a soft sponge instead. I tried it on my 66 Chevelle's rear bumper and the water spots came off easier than they ever did with soap. Now I'm wondering what else I've been doing wrong for 20 years, what's your go to for cleaning chrome without scratching it?
Wait, the salt in Dawn is what pits chrome? I've been using that stuff on my truck's grille and wheels for years thinking I was doing it a favor since it cuts grease so good. So baby shampoo actually works better and it's only 6 bucks? That older guy at the counter just saved you 20 years of slow damage and probably saved me too. I'm grabbing a bottle this weekend before I touch my chrome again.
